Classical Prague - 13th May to 17th May 2019

A fascinating visit to the Czech Republic’s historic capital, Prague, where the emphasis is on culture, rather than guided hiking routes. Our tour features some of Europe’s finest examples of architecture, including the Old Town, Jewish Quarter, Municipal House and Royal Gardens.

  • Guided tours of the old town from local experts
  • Tours outside of Prague to Karlštejn Castle and the village of Svatý Jan pod Skalou
  • Sightseeing cruise along the river Vltava
  • Cultural tours of the old Jewish quarter, birthplace of Franz Kafka
  • Stay in theluxurious, bohemian trapping of the Hotel Hoffmeister
  • Tours through the narrow, medieval streets of the picturesque capital

We also explore beyond the city limits, with visits to Karistejn Castle, Koneprusy Caves and the fascinating village of Svaty Jan pod Skalou. Add a leisurely cruise on Prague’s Vltava River and an optional classical concert in one of the City’s famous theatres and we are all set for a memorable experience.

Our Guided Tours

Our official English-speaking licensed local guide will provide the interpretation and interesting explanations for all the places we visit. May is the time of year when Venetian gondolas and scores of sailing ships cruise down the Vitava River in the Midsummer Navalis, a beautiful spectacle of lights, music and fireworks in honour of St. John of Nepomuk.

The walking on this holiday is graded Easy and is intended to be relaxing and enjoyable with stops to take photographs and gain a bit of insight into the area courtesy of our guides. We expect to walk around 4 – 6 kms a day, which should be well within the capability of anyone who is reasonable fit.

Continue to the Old Town Square with its renowned astronomical clock “Orloj“. Here we enter the former Jewish Quarter at the house where Franz Kafka was born.

Our guide will explain the history of the former ghetto and the oldest synagogue in Central Europe – the Old New Synagogue. Prague’s Jewish Museum is made up of four synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery as well as an art gallery and the Old Ceremonial Hall exhibition space.  This promises to be a unique cultural experience while learning about the life and traditions of Jews who were confined to the former Prague Jewish Quarter.

DAY 3: WEDNESDAY 15 MAY -   Karlštejn Castle, Koněprusy caves and village of Svatý Jan pod Skalou  (BD)

After breakfast in the hotel we depart by private coach for Karlštejn Castle (45 minutes). After exploring the castle and learning about its history we walk through pretty narrow streets lined with small souvenir shops and cafés.

Karlštejn Castle was founded in 1348 by the Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor as his private residence and a place of safekeeping for the royal treasures, especially his collections of holy relics and the Imperial Crown Jewels. In 1355 Charles IV stayed here for the first time, overseeing the construction and decoration work. The construction was completed in 1365 when the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower was consecrated.

The castle was the residence of Charles IV and his son Wenceslas IV until 1419. As a fortress, Karlštejn Castle protected the crown jewels, holy relics, and royal archives until the 17th century. Over the centuries the castle has always been in the hands of the king or a state institution, never in private hands. Nowadays it is owned by the state.

From Karlštejn Castle we drive (40 minutes) to visit the Koněprusy Caves,  situated in Central Bohemia, 7 km South of Beroun, in the middle of the nature reserve of Czech Karst, not far from castles Křivoklát and Karlštejn. The old Devonian limestone caves consist of three levels to be found 70 metres below ground and over 2 km long. The accessible part is 620 metres long. The tour lasts one hour.

From Koněprusy we drive (40 minutes) to the Village Svatý Jan pod Skalou where we see the first marked hiking trails in the Czech Republic, the oldest surviving local tourist route.

Optional refreshment at Hotel Obecná Škola“before returning to our hotel, a journey (45 minutes).

Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight at Hotel Hoffmeister.

After breakfast in the hotel we sit back and enjoy a two hour cruise along Prague’s Vltava River for panoramic views of the medieval city including Prague Castle, Lesser Town, Old Town and the Jewish Quarter and the gothic Charles Bridge with its dark high rising towers. The medieval town was built along the shallowest river shores and among hills which offers quite a unique view of the capital.

Lunch during the river cruise followed by free time in the afternoon.

Dinner at a local restaurant and overnight at Hotel Hoffmeister.

Weather in Prague is very typical of a continental climate, with stark, freezing winters and long summers, packed with plenty of daylight. By travelling in May, we can expect to experience mild, bright days out walking without the humidity associated with summers in the Czech Republic.
